Russian River First Flush 2007 Summary Report
2007
How polluted is the storm water entering our urban creeks? This is the question that motivates volunteers from all over the county to don rain gear and sample creeks during the first flush, or first significant rainfall event of the wet season.

The results from the 2008 Russian River First Flush and 2007 Russian River First Flush events are summarized in these reports.

If you are interested in finding out more about Russian River First Flush sampling events, past and future, please contact Sierra Cantor.

Habitat Restoration and Conservation Plan for Anadromous Salmonid Habitat in Selected Tributaries of the Russian River Basin (download pdf icon pdf) no charge

Habitat Restoration and Conservation Plan for Anadromous Salmonid Habitat in Selected Tributaries of the Russian River Basin A 150 page draft report prepared by the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) in collaboration with the Russian River Watershed Salmonid Coalition (Salmon Coalition).

NMFS recognized the value of working cooperatively with the Salmon Coalition to identify necessary measures to recover listed species in sub-watersheds within the Russian River Basin. NMFS also recognizes the value of previous habitat restoration projects to population recovery in several watersheds in the Russian River Basin. To these ends, NMFS developed a strategy for completing a plan for conserving habitat in selected streams within Dry Creek, Alexander, and Knights Valleys that were designated as critical habitat for steelhead. November, 2007.

Austin Creek Watershed Assessment The Austin Creek Watershed Assessment uses a Geographic Information System (GIS) to analyse the features of the Austin Creek watershed, document past land uses and trends in the system. The focus of the analysis is erosion problems, areas of major vegetation changes and other features related to water quality and anadromous fish habitats. The assessment also includes recommendations to improve water quality and aquatic habitats. no charge

Russian River Coastal Tributary Improvement Program The Russian River Coastal Tributary Improvement Program inventoried and assessed watershed features and conditions, established monitoring sites and collected monitoring data, involved community members, agencies and private property owners, and integrated the information from the assessment into an action plan consisting of Best Management Practices (BMPs), revegetation and riparian enhancement projects and recommendations for continued actions to improve water quality and salmonid habitat in the target watersheds.

Controlling Giant Reed in the Russian River (download pdf icon pdf)

Controlling Giant Reed in the Russian River Giant Reed (Arundo donax) has spread rapidly throughout California's rivers and creeks, causing damage to both the riparian environments and the surrounding landholdings. Tens of millions of tax dollars are being spent each year in Southern California to remove this noxious weed. However, if we continue to move quickly, the Russian River infestation can be successfully controlled while it's still relatively small.

Map of Giant Reed in the Russian River watershed Arundo donax Removal Program: Mitigated Negative Declaration. The Russian River watershed is being invaded by a non-native weed that threatens the viability of numerous fish and wildlife species. The highly destructive giant reed (Arundo donax) is degrading native riparian habitat by displacing native plants and destroying fish and wildlife habitat.

The Watershed Atlas Workbook is for the communities of people in the Russian River watershed who want to restore the salmon fishery and improve stewardship and land management of their watersheds.

The use of the watershed atlas is part of the Community Creek Stewardship Program developed by the SRCD using funding from the Sonoma County Water Agency and the State Water Resources Control Board with the goal of expanding the understanding of each of the tributary watersheds through the involvement of the community that lives there and has the greatest ability to improve the habitat and conditions in the watershed. Monitoring information developed through completion of the atlas for each tributary will guide improved stewardship and restoration efforts and allow for limited funds to be used on the most critical problems.
